多年生水生草本。茎圆柱形，不分枝，形似叶柄，顶生单叶。叶飘浮，近革质，宽卵圆形或近圆形，长3-10厘米，下面密生腺体，基部心形，全缘，具不明显的掌状叶脉，叶柄短，圆柱形，长1-3厘米。花多数，簇生节上，5数；花梗细弱，圆柱形，不等长，短于叶柄，长3-4.5厘米；花萼长3-5.5毫米，分裂近基部，裂片卵状椭圆形或卵形，先端钝，全缘，脉不明显；花冠白色，基部黄色，长4-8毫米，分裂近基部，冠筒短，喉部具5束长毛，裂片卵形，先端钝，边缘平滑，有一隆起的纵褶达裂片两端；雄蕊着生于冠筒上，整齐，花丝线形，长1-2毫米，花药长0.8-1毫米。子房无柄，柱头2裂，裂片三角形。蒴果近球形，直径3-5毫米，成熟时不开裂；种子常少数，黄色，近球形，直径1.3-1.5毫米，表面粗糙或光滑。花果期9月。
产四川、湖北、湖南、江苏、福建、广东（包括香港）、台湾。模式标本采自印度东部。
据R. V. Nair（1975）报道，本种花柱异长，有长花柱和短花柱的花。但我们未见活的植物，仅依蜡叶标本不易观察它们。本种的叶在生长后期边缘上能产生“珠芽”，由它可长成新的植物。
Hara, Chater et Williams （Enum. Fl．Pl．Nepal 3: 95．1982．）将本种作为 N. hydrophyllum（Lour.）O. Kuntze的异名，但后者的花冠浅裂，裂片短，边缘有流苏状毛，种子表面有刺等与本种不同而不宜归并。

Rhizomes horizontal. Stems cylindric, unbranched, with a terminal leaf. Petiole cylindric, 1-3 cm; leaf blade ovate-orbicular to suborbicular, 3-10 cm, subcoriaceous, abaxially densely glandular, base cordate, margin entire, veins indistinct. Flowers many, grouped on nodes, 5merous. Pedicel cylindric, 3-4.5 cm. Calyx 3-5.5 mm, lobed to near base; lobes ovate-elliptic to ovate, apex obtuse. Corolla white with a yellow center, 4-8 mm; lobes ovate with a keeled fold from base to apex, apex obtuse. Filaments linear, 1-2 mm; anthers 0.8-1 mm. Style short; stigma lobes triangular. Capsules subglobose, 3-5 mm in diam., few seeded. Seeds light brown, globose, 1.3-1.5 mm in diam.; seed coat smooth or scabrous. Fl. and fr. Sep. 2n = 18.
