株高约1米。叶基生，叶片长圆状披针形或卵状披针形，长30-55厘米，宽20厘米，顶端渐尖，基部圆形而中央急尖，薄革质，两面均无毛；叶柄长达30厘米；叶枕长2-3厘米。头状花序无总花梗，自叶鞘生出，球形，直径3-5厘米，稠密，由4-5或更多之小穗组成；苞片长圆形，长2-2.5厘米，顶端具刺状小尖头，内藏小花一对；花白色，长2厘米；萼片线形，长5毫米；花冠管长8毫米，裂片椭圆形，长5毫米，宽2毫米；外轮退化雄蕊倒卵形，长5毫米；子房无毛或顶端被小柔毛。果长圆形，长1.2厘米；外果皮薄；内有种子1枚；种子椭圆形，长1厘米，被红色假种皮。花期：2-5月。
产我国广东、广西、贵州、云南等省区；生于密林中阴湿之处。亚洲南部至东南部广布。

Inflorescence sessile, composed of 4 or 5 or more spikelets, globose, 3--8 cm in diam.; bracts crowded, oblong, 2--2.5 cm, apex with a spinescent acumen. Flowers 2 per bract, white to yellowish white. Sepals linear, ca. 5 mm. Corolla tube ca. 8 mm; lobes elliptic, ca. 5 × 2 mm. Outer staminodes obovate, ca. 5 mm. Ovary glabrous or apically puberulent.
