  多年生草本或近一、二年生草本;植株有浓烈的香气。主根单一,狭纺锤形、垂直,半木质或木质化;根状茎粗短,直立,半木质或木质,常有细的营养枝,枝上密生叶。茎通常单生,稀2-3枚,高40-90(-130)厘米,红褐色或褐色,有纵纹;常自下部开始分枝,枝长10-20厘米或更长,下部分枝开展,上部枝多斜上展;茎、枝幼时被灰白色或灰黄色绢质柔毛,以后脱落。基生叶与营养枝叶两面被灰白色绢质柔毛。叶近圆形、长卵形,二至三回羽状全裂,具长柄,花期叶凋谢;茎下部叶初时两面密被灰白色或灰黄色略带绢质的短柔毛,后毛脱落,叶长卵形或椭圆形,长1.5-3.5厘米,宽1-3厘米,二至三回羽状全裂,每侧有裂片3-4枚,再次羽状全裂,每侧具小裂片1-2枚,小裂片狭线形,长3-5毫米,宽0.2-1毫米,不再分裂或具1-2枚小裂齿,叶柄长2-4厘米;中部叶初时两面被短柔毛,后脱落,叶长圆形或长卵形,长1-2厘米,宽0.5-1.5厘米,一至二回羽状全裂,每侧具裂片2-3枚,不分裂或再3全裂,小裂片丝线形或为毛发状,长4-8毫米,宽0.2-0.3(-0.5 )毫米,多少弯曲;茎上部叶与分枝上叶及苞片叶3-5 全裂或不分裂。头状花序近球形,稀近卵球形,极多数,直径1-1.5(-2)毫米,具极短梗或无梗,基部有线形的小苞叶,在分枝上偏向外侧生长,并排成复总状或复穗状花序,而在茎上再组成大型、开展的圆锥花序;总苞片3-4层,外层总苞片草质、卵形,背面绿色、无毛,边缘膜质,中、内层总苞片长卵形或椭圆形,半膜质;花序托小,凸起;雌花5一7朵,花冠狭圆锥状或狭管状,冠檐具2裂齿,花柱线形,伸出花冠外,先端2叉,叉端尖;两性花4-10朵,不孕育,花冠管状,花药线形,先端附属物尖,长三角形,花柱短,先端膨大,2裂,不叉开,退化子房不明显。瘦果倒卵形或长圆形,褐色。花果期7-10月。
  遍及全国,东部、南部省区分布在中、低海拔地区的山坡、旷野、路旁等,西北省区分布在中、低海拔至2 800米的地区。西南省区最高分布到3 800(-4 000)米地区,在半干旱或半温润地区的山坡、林缘、路旁、草原、黄土高原、荒漠边缘地区都有,局部地区构成植物群落的优势种。为欧、亚大陆温带与亚热带地区广布种。朝鲜、日本、伊朗、土耳其、阿富汗、巴基斯坦、印度、苏联及欧洲东部和中部各国都有。模式标本采自匈牙利。
  本种在北温带与高寒地区为一、二年生草本,根垂直,茎单生;而在稍温暖地区则为多年生草本,其主根虽然亦单一,垂直,狭纺锤状,但地下部分经冬不死,当年生茎冬季枯死后,翌年春天又从根部萌发出新的地上茎,因此地上茎多2-3枚或数枚。
  本种外形近似于茵陈. A. capillaris Thunb.,过去也有学者将本种作为茵陈蒿的变种A. Papillaris Thunb. var. scoparia (Waldst. et Kit.) Pamp.。与茵陈蒿的区别在于本种为多年生或近一、二年生草本,茎基部叶二至三回羽状全裂;中部叶长圆形或长卵形,一至二回羽状全裂,小裂片细,为狭线形、细线形或毛发状;头状花序小,直径1-1.5 2)毫米,在分枝上排成复总状或复穗状花序,并在茎上组成大型开展的圆锥花序。基生叶、幼苗及幼叶等入药,民间称“土茵陈”,化学成分、功用等与“茵陈蒿”同。据考证:古本草书如《政和本草》、《本草纲目》等书中称“北茵陈”、“山茵陈”、“西茵陈”及“石茵陈”等可能都是本种。亦作青蒿(即黄花蒿)的代用品。

Herbs, perennial, biennial, or annual, 40-90(-130) cm tall, much branched from lower on stem; branches and leaves gray or yellowish sericeous-pubescent, later glabrescent, strongly aromatic. Lower stem leaves: petiole 2-4 cm; leaf blade ovate-oblong or elliptic, 1.5-3.5 × 1-3 cm, 2- or 3-pinnatisect; segments 3 or 4 pairs; lobules 1 or 2 pairs, 3-5 × 0.2-1 mm. Middle stem leaves sessile; leaf blade oblong or ovate-oblong, 1-2 × 0.5-1.5 cm, 1- or 2-pinnatisect; segments 2 or 3 pairs; lobules filiform, usually curved, 4-8 × 0.2-0.3(-0.5) mm. Uppermost leaves and leaflike bracts 3-5-sect. Synflorescence a broad panicle. Capitula many, shortly pedunculate or sessile. Involucre subglobose, rarely ovoid, 1-1.5(-2) mm in diam. Marginal female florets 5-7. Disk florets 4-10, male. Achenes obovoid or oblong. Fl. and fr. Jul-Oct. 2n = 16, 18, 36.
