在汉语中，我们常常用植物名词来作比喻，让句子更加形象生动。比如我们常用“小辣椒”比喻性格泼辣的人，用“榆木疙瘩”比喻脑袋瓜不灵活的人。英语当然也不例外，也有用植物名词来喻人的，现举例如下：
　　1．He has three sons but his daughter is the apple of his eye．
　　他有三个儿子，但女儿才是他的掌上明珠。(苹果——受宠爱的人)
　　2．The country lost the flower of its youth in the war．
　　那个国家在战争中失去了许多优秀青年。(花——精华)
　　3．She is a virgin，a most unspotted lily.
　　她是个纯洁的少女，一朵洁白无瑕的百合花。(百合花——纯洁的人)
　　4．She’s a Chaplin nut．Shes seen all his films．
　　她是个卓别林迷，她看过他所有的影片。(坚果——对……极感兴趣的人)
　　5．I must say his latest girl-friend is a peach．
　　我得说他新交的女朋友十分漂亮。(桃——美人)
　　6．He is a peacb to work with．
　　他是个合作的好伙伴。(桃——受人喜欢的人)
　　7．He shows a lot of strength for such a peanut．
　　就这么个矮小的人而言，他算是充分显示了力量。(花生——矮小的人)
　　8．A man of learning is supposed to be some pumpkins．
　　学问高深的人常被认为是重要人物。(南瓜——重要人物，通常用复数形式并与some连用)
　　9．She is a rose of loveliness．她是位可爱的美人。(玫瑰——美人)
　　此外还有：a smooth apple讨人喜欢的人；a wise apple傲慢的年轻人；banana：喜剧演员，大鼻子；cabbage洋白菜，少女；carrot胡萝卜，红头发的人(用复数)；mushroom蘑菇，暴发户；onion洋葱，讨厌的家伙，笨蛋；a small potato微不足道的人；tomato美女；weed野草，多余讨厌的人，纤弱的人；wheat天真无邪的青年，乡下人。
